Since graduating, Alex's career has been focused on business valuation and damage quantification. His practice has involved providing independent, consulting, and jointly-retained expert services with respect to business valuations for shareholder transactions, estate planning, mergers and acquisitions, shareholder dissent cases, and financial reporting. On the damage quantification side, his expert work has specialized in class actions, shareholder disputes, breaches of contract, tax litigation matters, and other commercial litigation matters. His work has spanned jurisdictions that include Canada, the United States, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands.
Notably, Alex has been the expert in multiple high-stakes class action disputes such as: (i) Manuge et al. v. His Majesty The King as the named expert in a $817 million settlement concerning the quantification of underpaid pension payments; and, (ii) Gamblin et al. v. The Government of Manitoba as an expert to determine the total class size of prison inmates allegedly unjustly placed into solitary confinement.
Alex is a Chartered Business Valuator (CBV) and currently serves as an instructor for the Level I curriculum of the designation for the CBV Institute. Alex also completed a joint, double-degree program with Honours at the University of Waterloo (Bachelor of Mathematics, specializing in statistics) and Wilfrid Laurier University (Bachelor of Business Administration, specializing in finance).
Prior to joining Soriano Mizrahi de Gray Inc., Alex worked in similar roles within the dispute advisory practices at a Big 4 accounting firm and a leading international valuation and dispute services consultancy firm. In addition to his subject-specific work, Alex served as a Director of Finance and Director at Large on the board of a hospital volunteer association that ran multiple quick service restaurants and other stores.
